Federal Government Exempts GST/HST on Services provided by Naturopathic Doctors

For Immediate Release

Toronto, ON, February 11, 2014

Naturopathic Doctors across the Country Laud the Federal Government for Removing Barriers to Primary Health Care Services.

The Canadian Association of Naturopathic Doctors (CAND) applauds the federal government for exempting GST/HST on services provided by naturopathic doctors, as announced in today’s federal budget. The move will provide greater access for patients seeking a proactive approach to their health care needs and those looking for an individualized, whole person approach to prevent and treat health issues.

“Naturopathic doctors are, indeed, primary healthcare providers. They integrate standard, medical diagnostics with a broad range of therapies”, said Dr. Pat Wales, ND, Chair of the CAND. “Having patients pay taxes on essential primary health care services didn’t sit well with our members, or our patients, and we are pleased that the Government of Canada agreed”.

Naturopathic doctors are regulated in five provinces and two are soon to follow. In British Columbia and Ontario, naturopathic doctors have prescribing authority. Naturopathic doctors can, and do, work together with other medical practitioners as part of a patient’s overall health care team resulting in improved outcomes in some of the most chronic and costly areas of the healthcare system including cardiovascular disease and diabetes.

“Patients want greater health care options, partnerships, and access tools that will empower them to become and remain healthy”, added Shawn O’Reilly, Executive Director of the CAND. “Removing taxes on services provided by naturopathic doctors will not only help remove the barriers to such options for patients, it will help ensure our health care system stimulates the economy for future health care sustainability”.

Naturopathic Integrative Medicine

When I started practicing naturopathic medicine in 1996, it was almost impossible to find soy milk.  Almond ilk, coconut milk, hemp milk, none of them existed.  It is exciting to see integrative medicine becoming mainstream.  Now I see the Mayo clinic has published a book on alternative medicine and a course in naturopathic medicine is being taught in medical schools as 62% of the North American population uses some form of alternative medicine.

Further what is exciting is the growing scientific evidence base that supports the use of these treatments.  Integrative medicine, blends the best of conventional and alternative medicine and is the mainstay of my practice.  While the internet has enabled us to educate ourselves on alternatives, it has also promoted over-hyped products that promise to cure every ill.  I can tell you after 17 years in practice, that no single cure exists that I have come across.  Each of us is an individual and that is the foundation of the way that I treat people.  In the end we are all unique creations - and what works for one person does not necessarily work for another.  That is the beauty of being trained in a wide variety of therapeutics, such as acupuncture, nutrition, therapy, supplements, herbs, etc. It allows both the patient and myself to choose what works best for their lifestyle etc.
